A week after school ended, I took a small group of this year’s graduates whale watching in San Francisco. We completed a persuasive unit on the documentaries, “The Cove” and “Blackfish”, and the students came up with the idea to go on a fieldtrip to see whales in their natural habitat. It felt great that the kids wanted to do something together as a group because of what they learned in class. They’re so well-versed in anti-captivity ideals now and I just love it. If you haven’t seen either “The Cove” or “Blackfish” I highly recommend that you do so. Then I’ll take you whale watching afterward. ๐
Here are some images from our trip. Whale watching has been on my bucket list for a long time. I used to want to be a marine biologist when I grew up. Science was my favorite subject! Maybe now I’ll quit teaching, buy a boat, and go whale watching all day, every day. Anyone else want in? ๐

Heading under the Golden Gate as we leave the bay.Our boat left a bit after 8 and we spotted our first whales at 8:45!See how close to the bridge we still are?Blowhole fun. ๐Birds flying by Mile Rock. I love the dilapidated look of this little lighthouse. So much character.I GOT A TAIL SHOT. Is what I hollered out loud after getting this shot. We all had our fingers crossed for some tail action. We weren’t out very far yet so the whales didn’t stick their tails very high into the air. But hey, I’ll take what I can get! ๐Goodbye, tail. Some more tail action.I need a sailboat. Somebody anybody want to buy/loan me a boat?Kissy face. We had a variety of friends following us throughout our five hour boat trip. This is not a whale, but sometimes I like to aim my camera at birds flying overhead to see what I shots I can get. One day a bird will poop on my lens and then I’ll never do it again. *knock on wood*Mile Rock on the way back to shore. Bye whales, see you again next time!
Great pictures! I have been waiting for weeks to see the whale pictures!! It was such a fun field trip with Miss Nguyen. I am convinced she is one of the best teachers I know in California!!
It’s been a long time that I saw the Golden Gate Bridge….may be 2007…
I
Loved all the captures and the panoramic views of individual clicks.
Amazing work Patty! It felt like I was there to see it all!
I’m already trying to figure out when we can go again. I just realized we never got around to our Skype chat!! I’m on summer vacation now so I have loads of free time!

Our summer break is from the first weekend of June until the third week of August. Other districts around have different schedules, though. My boyfriend is a professor and he goes from end of Aug/early September to the third week of May. I wish I was out in May!!! ๐
wow that is a long time. State ones get less holiday here, the private more, i can never work out the theory you pay for schooling yet get less of it lol x
I’ve missed all of these posts, not sure what happened. Been a bit out of it, maybe it was me. The whales are so cool. Love the photo’s!
Loved each one of them Patty. Especially the bridge one!
This should have been a worth-going trip for you and your students. How I wish it was there in my place! ๐
Patty, we were along the California Coast earlier this year, and didn’t have any whale sightings. It’s incredible that you spotted so many, rather quickly! What type of a lens did you use to capture these?
The last month has been incredible for whale watching in the Monterey area and I’m SO JEALOUS I’m not there. I used my 24-70mm for these shots. How did you enjoy the CA coast?
Loved the California Coast! We stopped in Monterey, of course, continuing along Highway One past Big Sur, and on to Santa Barbara wine country. On a separate weekend trip, we explored the Sonoma Coast. Lovely all around.
Wow, those photos are awesome. Love them all.:)
Thanks, Mom. You have to come with me next time!
