Happy Fiesta Friday, ya’ll! Can’t wait to see what everyone is bringing this week! 🙂
Since my last smoothie post, I have continued to drink some variation of green smoothies almost every day for lunch. I am so proud! But I eat tons of unhealthy foods to make up for it, so don’t start thinking that I’m all healthy and virtuous that way. I love me a good dessert, as you can probably tell by all my dessert recipes.
This smoothie tastes like blended fruits and vegetables. I know many people are afraid of veggies in their drinks and add different ingredients to mask the green leafy flavors, but I don’t mind the taste. For me it’s part of the cleansing process. I don’t need anything extra sugary or creamy with my green smoothie because it rather defeats the purpose for me. This is probably because I have enough sweet and creamy in my diet as it is, so I shy away from any extra. 😉
Triple Berry Green Smoothie
Ingredients:
- 2 large kale leaves, torn into small pieces (I also chop up the stems for extra fiber)
- 4 cucumber slices
- 1 cup mixed berries (I use my own frozen blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries)
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds
- 8 oz. water (you can substitute milk (dairy or non-dairy) or juice if you prefer)
Directions:
Blend all ingredients together until smooth. I use my Nutribullet and it does a great job.
Well, drinking healthy smoothies and eating unhealthy foods is just balance eating, I think. 🙂 This is what I do to. 😀 Happy Fiesta Friday! xx Btw, this smoothie sounds delicious!
Jhuls, what if there’s more unhealthy than healthy? 😉
Uhm, I think exercise could beat that unhealthy something in our bodies! 😉 And that’s what statred doing. 😉 xx
Good point. I guess I better start moving around more! 😛
Let’s do this! 😉 xx
Silly kids! This is a very healthy smoothie. I am intrigued by smoothies–do they actually fill you up for a meal or are you hungry two hours later? Perhaps it’s time I buy a blender….
Depends on what you put in the smoothies, Ngan! I sometimes toss in a few walnuts for extra protein! And you’ll need a high-powered blender to pulverize everything. I love my Nutribullet for this.
I just showed my husband your post and he said, “I would drink smoothies all the time if we had a blender.” Guess I’m going shopping this weekend. 🙂
Ooh how fun! You’ll have to let me know which one you get! Make sure it’s a supercharged one! I’ve had chunky smoothies and they’re not so fun! 😀
Sounds like a delicious way to start the day with the added bonus of less guilt over dessert after dinner!
Mmmm…all I read in your sentence was dessert… 😉
Haha :))
Sounds great, I am a little afraid of veggies in smoothies but I think I’d give it a try. Do you think it would keep ok if I made it in the morning and brought one to work for lunch?
Alex, if you’re new, stick to a ratio of 50/50 veggies and fruit and you’ll probably like the taste better! Also, add half of an apple and you’ll be amazed at how sweet the drink becomes. I always blend mine in the morning and drink it at lunch. Hope that helps! 🙂
That is super helpful thank you, I can’t wait to start making them!
What a healthy and delicious concoction. Sometimes a smoothie just hits the spot! Yum 🙂
Yes, I love how healthy smoothies are. Gets rid of tons of guilt! 😉
Wow! Beautiful photos Patty, and I just love your dog! So cute! I wonder if I will ever be brave enough to try something like this! It looks good….it actually looks chocolaty! Maybe I will try it and pretend it is chocolate…..hehehe.
Lori, go 50/50 with the fruits and veggies! My favorite fruit to add is fresh pineapple. So fresh and tasty!
Thanks Patty! I will let you know if I get brave enough to try it! 🙂
Sounds like a plan! Also, if you are brave enough, try spinach instead for a milder tasting green!
Okay! 🙂
[…] Patty […]
Wow! My husband has been bugging me about making our own healthy smoothies for breakfast. This looks perfect! Your little dog is a sweetie, btw!
Yes, Bailey is my little fluffy booboo. I hug him more often than he likes. 😛 If you’re new to smoothies go with a 50/50 blend of fruits and veggies. You can wean yourself off the fruit as you acquire a taste for the drinks!
Patty, if you could just put the lids on the jars and post them to Ireland, I’ll happily try one for you!
Melissa, that would be one fantastic science experiment!!!
I came to yours thinking you are serving chocolate milkshake of some sort… dark colour confused me. I like kale, but I never tried green smoothie yet, I want to show your cute Bailey eating cucumber to my boys, they might learn a lesson!
Haha, you’re not the only one to think this is chocolate! How funny! Maybe you can make this and your boys will drink it before they realize it’s not chocolate?? 😉
Yay, I found another smoothie and whole-foods lover! So glad I stumbled across your blog on Fiesta Friday. This smoothie looks delicious – looking forward to more great stuff from you! 🙂
Thanks, Lisa! Sometimes I feel like a bipolar healthy person. I’ll go all out…then go the complete opposite direction! I’ve fallen in love with these smoothies. I feel proud that I’m taking care of my body with all these nutrients! Then I make dessert. Hah! 😉
I have to agree, Patty! I’m very much the same way! I still indulge from time to time – just try to keep the portions small and less often. I still can’t give up my fruity licorice or s’mores every now and then… 🙂
Mmmm…s’mores…
Wow, Patty, this smoothie is something fabulous!
Thanks, Fae! They’re so easy to blend up and have for lunch. Takes a lot of thinking out of what to pack for my midday meal. 🙂
Uhm… Patty, I think only you and your photo can make green smoothie look so appetizing. Actually, the cucumbers help, too. I’m very much in agreement with Bailey. Does he ever take a bad photo? 🙂
Oh yes, I have so many funny and unflattering pictures of him! I have over 1500 pictures on my phone and they’re all either food shots or Bailey shots. 😀
Love the recipe and pictures Patty! Wish I could get Fred to consider a some cucumbers! =)
I heard some dogs really enjoy baby carrots. Not Bailey, though. He spits them on the ground. He’s kinda high maintenance that way. 😉
Yum, this looks divine Patty! Your dog is so, so cute! 🙂
Thanks, Jessica!!
Thanks Patty for a new recipe to try. I need to put more “green” in my smoothies – I have used spinach but not kale. I wonder if almond milk would be good? I guess I will have to experiment – that’s why I like to make smoothies as you can do anything you want 🙂
Oh yes, I’ve used almond, soy, and coconut milk with great results!
I have all of the ingredients and I will make one in the morning and let you know 🙂
Feel free to adjust the ingredients as you wish, Juju!
Ha! In regards to “it’s out of focus…chomping on a piece” my pups won’t touch cucumber but are big fans of peas and carrots (and all other fruits and veg’, sans only a few.
That’s funny because Bailey only likes cooked carrots. He spits out raw ones. What a rascal. 😛
Fickle pickle! The raw carrots are their faves, cooked work too.
Yeah, Bailey is quite the diva. It’s unbelievable! 😉
love smoothies, I add hemp protein to mine, almond puree sometimes, and some seaweed if I want to get that extra green colour, which i think is SO cool! Love the post Patty.
That’s a great tip about the seaweed! I’m going to have to try that out since I love that extra green myself!
🙂 – I bought a bottle in the US, couldn’t find it here if you tried really really hard. I had it in San Fran and love the colour, it’s so eerily wonderfully and surprisingly green and I like the taste too as long as you don’t overdo it! Happy seaweed drinking.
By the way Patty a previous comment from my sister-in-law who is a research nurse with other credentials said ” go easy on the “green” smoothies. Too much fresh kale, spinach, broccoli, etc. can suppress the amount of hormone your thyroid gland puts out”. Hmmm – everything in moderation… 🙂
Ooh, would you mind asking her if two kale leaves, four days a week is okay? I’d really appreciate it!
I sure will Patty 🙂
So yummy!! I love smoothies.. and this one sounds so delicious Patty! Little Bailey is so photogenic.. such a sweet little thing! I need to get my blender out and get smoothie-ing… 🙂 Lovely post!
Ooh, have fun, Prudy! You must share your favorite blends, please! 🙂
I would like some, please! You make smoothies all the time, but I never seem to see or get any….odd.
Not my fault you’re not around!
We are hoping to buy a quality blender for smoothies and other things as well. Your smoothie looks like an epic vitamin bomb…hoping to try it soon!
Thanks, Laila! I hope you have fun on your smoothie-making mission! 🙂
My SIL said too much fresh green veggies such as kale and including spinach and broccoli can be dangerous if eaten daily/weekly. What is too much? I eat all three but in moderation. Anything cooked is fine. My SIL said she would look some more. I think it relates a lot to juicing which is not what we are doing. Tried it but I did not care for it after spending $300 on a machine!
Yes, I prefer smoothies over juicing. I feel better getting all that fiber in me! Please keep me posted on any updates from your SIL! 🙂
haha.. green smoothies made of grass- sounds funny. But smoothies are really such a great way of “undoing” all the junk we eat. You’re so healthy, Patty, you put us to shame!
Oh my goodness, I’m really not that healthy! I love bacon and cream and cake and pie and so many other fatty foods! Trust me!
Hahhaah.. But I know this is a good way to compensate for the things we eat. We take a shortcut and have lots of green tea to convince ourselves that it may negate everything fatty we ate! 😉 but I think it’s time we try this. I think it’s lunch tomorrow. Will tell you how it goes.
I had green tea this morning for the very same reason! How funny!
🙂
I love all those healthy ingredients! And your little dog is so cute! 🙂
Thanks, Nancy! He is quite a dapper little fluff muffin, if I do say so myself! 😛
Yum! This looks delicious and healthy!
Thanks, Nell! 😀
Actually I thought the color looked like chocolate, and chocolate coloured anything must be good, right?? 😛
Loving your colorful smoothies, it’s like a vicarious detox while I munch on, err, a fruit tart? He he. 😀
I wish this was chocolate! Please pass me one of your tarts!! 😉
Great recipe Patty and pictures as always! I’m always looking for more smoothie ideas, and I always sneak in vegetables with my fruit like spinach…you really can’t even taste it.
xx Rakhi
Gotta love veggies, Rakhi! 😀
Sounds delicious and I like the colour because it looks like chocolate milkshake!
I’d rather have a chocolate milkshake, Aimee!! 😛
Your puppy dog is so darn cute. I really like your recipe also. I will give it a try
Thanks, Shayla! I hope you enjoy!
Your photos are always very nicely taken! And smoothie definitely looks yummy 🙂
Thanks, Joy! 😀
Hey Patty – I just made your delicious “green smoothie” this morning. How tasty – I used almond breeze vanilla and mangoes instead of blackberries, raspberries and blueberries; otherwise I used your same ingredients. Oh, I added a little honey to it. I would like to put this on my blog in the near future (not on Fiesta Friday) – what is the proper way to do it? Just mention your blog and provide a link or what? I have never done this before – would appreciate some of your expert advice 🙂 P.S. I also used my Nutri Bullet!
By the way my smoothie was green 🙂
I just read my comments and in addition to mangoes I used blueberries and raspberries and replaced the water with the almond vanilla milk and added honey.
Haha expert advice? You’re too funny. I think you can link back to this post? That’s what I do when I reference another recipe! 😀
I did it – is it okay?
It’s perfect!!
🙂
Sorry, one more comment – I would like to post my recipe and refer to yours as the original recipe.
I’m so glad you tried it, Juju!! And mango? I looove mango! I can’t wait to see your recipe!!
Oh my Patty….the smoothie doesn’t feel like a green at all….looks so chocolaticious….what do I comment about the pictures now…….every click is million dollars..
Hugs 🙂
Okay new favorite word: chocolaticious! Wheee! 😛
😀
I would love to have some of your smoothie, I don’t d them very often but should give it a go! This looks delicious!
Thanks, Petra!
